Kirkus Style Review
If the third book in a series is a test of an author’s ability to capture a reader’s attention, hold it, and keep them coming back, NYT Bestselling author Jojo Moyes achieves high marks with Still Me.
Moyes brings one of her most endearing
protagonists back for a final installment in this follow up to Me Before You (2012) and After You (2015). Louisa Clark is best known as the quirky, striped-tights-wearing, working-class caretaker who fell in love with her quadriplegic patient, Will, in Me Before You. After the heartbreaking end to that novel, many readers rightfully wondered how Moyes would continue the story without Will; but against all odds, Moyes’ expert pen crafted After You and allowed us to follow Louisa through the loss of Will and on to new love with paramedic Sam. Now, in Still Me we follow Louisa from her native England to New York City where a new job opportunity offers her the chance to really find herself apart from her past. Still Me boasts an expanded cast of characters including the wealthy Gopniks, their neighbor Mrs. DeWitt and her dog Dean Martin, each with their own secrets and complications that Louisa must unravel. As she works and lives closely with the Gopnik family and faces the inherent difficulties of being a personal assistant, Louisa struggles to fit into the ultra-privileged New York City setting: “I felt, briefly, on the edge of tears….I was going to be a shadow again, a silent prop in an icy room.” Keeping her relationship with Sam alive and well across the ocean does not prove to be easy, either, especially given the quandary of Josh, Louisa’s handsome, new friend who looks stunningly like Will. Through it all, we root for Louisa who grows and triumphs, showing us what her plucky, can-do attitude will achieve.
At once hopeful and moving, the tone of Moyes’ beloved novels (The Girl You Left Behind, One Plus One, The Ship of Brides) never falter and her characters always win a spot in readers’ hearts. Considering that this is the third offering in a trilogy, Still Me is no less a complete novel than Moyes’ many bestselling stand-alone novels.
Verdict: A more than satisfying conclusion, this is an enjoyable final installment that will have readers wishing the trilogy didn’t have to end.
